Homemade Hamburger Peppers And Onion Gyros

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cucumber, grated and drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving:

  • Pita bread or flatbreads
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Sliced red onions
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Feta cheese (optional)

 

 

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce: a. In a bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber (make sure to squeeze out excess water), minced garlic, chopped dill, mint (if using), lemon juice, salt, and pepper. b. Mix well, cover, and refrigerate while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.

2. Make the Gyro Filling: a. In a large skillet, heat some oil over medium heat. b. Add the chopped onion and sliced bell pepper. Sauté until they become tender and slightly caramelized. c. Add minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute until the garlic is fragrant. d. Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and add the ground beef to the other side. Cook the beef, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula, until it’s browned and fully cooked. e. Once the beef is cooked, mix it with the sautéed vegetables and cook for a few more minutes until everything is well combined and heated through. Remove from heat.

3. Assemble the Gyros: a. Warm the pita bread or flatbreads in the oven or on a stovetop. b. Spread a generous spoonful of tzatziki sauce on each pita. c. Add a scoop of the homemade hamburger peppers and onion gyro filling. d. Top with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, lettuce, and crumbled feta cheese if desired.

4. Serve: a. Fold the pita over the filling, creating a wrap or gyro sandwich. b. Serve immediately while warm, and enjoy your homemade hamburger peppers and onion gyros!
