Prepare Shrimp: Rinse the shrimp and pat them dry with paper towels.
Soak in Buttermilk: Place the shrimp in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 15-30 minutes.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornmeal (if using), paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or fryer, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
Coat Shrimp: Remove shrimp from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off. Dredge each shrimp in the flour mixture, coating evenly.
Fry Shrimp: Carefully place the coated shrimp in the hot oil (do this in batches to avoid overcrowding). Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Drain: Remove the shrimp with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serve: Serve hot with lemon wedges and your favorite dipping sauce!
Enjoy your crispy fried shrimp!
